Spring Break in March is a wonderful time in Durango.  The sun is shining but we can also get some snow storms. The snow doesn't last long in downtown Durango but adds to the snowpack in the mountains. 

Skiing in the spring is warm and the snow is soft. Sitting out in the sun at Purgatory makes everything even better.

Here’s a four-day itinerary for a Spring Break in Durango, CO:

Day 1

On day 1, go up north and have some fun in the snow but make sure to grab breakfast before heading up the mountain. After having fun in the snow, take a stroll in town and grab dinner. 

  • Have a delicious breakfast at Carver Brewing Company

  • Ski or snowboard at Purgatory Resort

  • Take a walk on Main and Third Avenues to see the historic homes and businesses. Pick up the printed guides at the Welcome Center.

  • Eat at the Diamond Belle or the Mahogany Grille in the Strater Hotel

Day 2

Take advantage of the snow while you can, go back up north, grab a pair of snowshoes and take in the beautiful scenery the San Juan Mountains have to offer. 

  • Eat breakfast at College Drive Cafe

  • Rent snowshoes and head up to Andrews Lake 

  • Stop at the Nugget for a drink and a late lunch

  • Take a walk along the Animas River Trail

  • Have dinner at the Derailed Pour House

Day 3

On day 3, take it easy and stay closer to town. Grab some breakfast, have fun sledding and walk around downtown. Enjoy the local art and local flavors of Durango. 

  • Carver Brewing is a local favorite for Breakfast.  

  • Go Dog Sledding at the Durango Dog Ranch in La Plata Canyon

  • Check out the Yellow Carrot for lunch; their desserts are the best!

  • Durango has wonderful art galleries, so take the afternoon and stroll in the  historic downtown.

  • At 5:30, stop in the Diamond Belle Saloon for dinner and listen to the live music.  

Day 4

On your way back up north for another day of skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing, make sure to pack your swimsuit for the trip back to town. Don’t worry too much about food; Purgatory has plenty of places to eat, and Durango is only 25 miles away. 

  • Grab a quick bite at PJ’s market at Trimble Lane.  They have delicious pastries and  are happy to heat up a burrito or two!

  • After a morning on the snow, stop at Purg’s and eat on their outdoor  patio in the sun.

  • On your way into town, stop at Durango Hot Springs and soak in one of their numerous hot tubs.  If swimming is to your liking, the saltwater pool is the best!

  • For dinner, you might try Nayarit, voted one of Durango’s finest Mexican eateries.
