Visiting Durango this Summer with the whole family?
Families, reunions, and multi-generational holidays find something for everyone in Durango’s playground. With 300+ days of sunshine, friendly locals, and something for every budget, you will find Durango a favorite destination for destination group holidays.
We've built a four-day family-friendly itinerary that covers the highlights of Durango:
Day 1
All aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a historic coal-fired, steam-powered train ride to the mining town of Silverton. The 42-mile trip through breathtaking wilderness offers photo opportunities and sights you won’t see from the road. Enjoy lunch in Silverton before returning by train or coach bus to Durango. Stop into Animas Chocolate Company or the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for a treat when you return to the depot and have dinner at Steamworks Brewing Co before you catch any of the live music around town.
Day 2
Divide and conquer depending on what people want to do: raft the Animas River on a 2-hour raft trip, take cruiser bikes on the Animas River Trail, hike Hogsback, Horse Gulch, or the Colorado Trail. Enjoy lunch on the river at the Animas River Grille and Lounge then assemble the gang for a taste of artisan ice cream at Cream Bean Berry. Rest up before you spend your evening at the Bar D Wranglers Chuckwagon dinner and western show.
Day 3
Take on a day of adventure ziplining at Full Blast Adventure Center or Soaring Tree Top Adventures. Another option is to head to Purgatory Resort for the Alpine Slide, the Plunge zipline, hiking, and a picnic in the mountains. In the evening, enjoy live music downtown, a performance at the Durango Arts Center or a live show at the Henry Strater Theatre.
Day 4
Everyone will enjoy a day at the high mountain hamlet of Vallecito Lake. Take a breakfast, rent a pontoon boat for a cruise and fishing, or take an hourly horseback ride in the mountains. Remember to watch for the Ponderosa Pine commemorative carvings on the Tour of Carvings. End the day with a campfire near the lake.
